Unequal Democracies: Romania

Voter turnout in Romania has declined since the 1990 elections. The decrease is signfiicnatly higher than in other European countries with a low point of 32% in 2020. The recent 2024 elections have marked a turnaround with record-high turnout icnreases. n countries.

The record-high decline can be attributed to three main drivers:

a) high levels of emigration

b) low levels of interest in politics

c) low levels of trust in political parties

The report suggests different solutions to increase
voter turnout:

a) remove institutional barriers and improve procedures for diaspora voters

b) convince political parties to come up with a better offer for votera

c) decrease the voting age to 16 for the European Parliament elections
