Only liberal nationalism can defeat the far-right

Project Syndicate • Filip Milačić

As far-right movements exploit national identity to win hearts and votes, liberals risk ceding the cultural ground they once abandoned. To counter this surge, they must craft an inclusive, emotionally resonant vision of shared destiny that reclaims national symbols for democratic values. Lessons from Israel, Poland, Brazil, and the Netherlands show that liberal nationalism can unite diverse citizens against fear-driven politics and defend democracy before it’s too late, writes Filip Milačić in Project Syndicate.
