No Democracy Without Gender Equality: A New Gender Contract for Europe

Amid rising threats to democracy, anti-gender backlash, and widening gender gaps at the ballot box, we’ll explore how inclusive, gender-equal policymaking can help renew and strengthen European democracies.

Andrea Pető (Professor in the Department of Gender Studies at Central European University - CEU) and Laeticia Thissen (Senior Policy Analyst for Gender Equality at the Foundation for European Progressive Studies – FEPS), co-editors of the new book A New Gender Equality Contract for Europe, will present some of its core arguments. This timely volume charts concrete pathways for advancing gender equality through policymaking as a means to strengthen democracy in Europe, bringing together leading feminist thinkers and EU policy experts to imagine a new “gender contract” for Europe.

Barbara Hoffmann, Head of the Gender Equality Policy Department at the Karl Renner Institute, will offer reflections on the book and share strategic insights on how Austria and other European countries can strengthen democracy by advancing gender equality.

The event will conclude with an open discussion, inviting the audience to share their thoughts and engage with the speakers.
