Democracy Talks #2 with Matthijs Bogaards

4 December 2024 6pm • FES Vienna

The year of elections is coming to an end. An unprecedented number of voters around the world have cast their ballots in 2024 and reshaped many political landscapes. The climax came undoubtedly with the election of Donald Trump to a second term as U.S. President. Closer to home, we have witnessed the historic win of the FPÖ in the Nationalratswahl. All in all, it was a historically bad year for governments around the world, all of which lost vote share and were often voted out of office in light of the cost of living crisis and general uncertainty about the future.

The year 2025 could be labelled as the year of consequences. New governments will take office, many with ambitious agendas, often focused on reshaping the democratic structures in their countries. All the more timely to take stock and look ahead at what 2025 brings for our democracies with a new edition of “Democracy Talks”, this time with Matthijs Bogaards, Professor in the Department of Political Science at CEU. Matthijs has published widely on political parties and electoral systems in comparative perspective, on democratization, and on divided societies. He is also coordinator of CEU's new essay series: Open Questions in the Comparative Study of Democracy and Authoritarianism.

In“Democracy Talks”, FES Democracy of the Future invites close partners to get together at our premises and discuss pressing topics alongside food and drinks.
